US (MI): Cannabis regulation official presents proposed new rules to industry professionals

Cannabis retail sales in Michigan continue to soar, but concerns about how to regulate sales and distribution across the state have left many with legal questions.

"The demand is there. We are breaking retail sales records every quarter. Michigan is definitely a cannabis tourism state," said Brian Hanna, Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency executive director.

At first glance, the cannabis industry in Michigan looks like a booming business. Hanna said retail sales consistently surpass $300 million monthly across the state. Even though sales continue to rise, experts say regulating the industry is challenging. Hanna said changes must be made to help those following the rules.

"Compliance is an issue," Hanna said. "It is something that happens in any program across the country." Hanna and the Cannabis Regulatory Agency are drafting a new set of rules. He explained these potential changes to industry professionals at the Great Lakes Cannabis Collaboration Conference, held today at Northern Michigan University. A new rule includes banning CBD to THC conversion.
