Ditches around horticultural companies filling up with residual water is a thing of the past. New regulations in the Netherlands require growers to remove 95% of crop protection products before discharging. But the Dutch grower would not be the Dutch grower if he was not a bit more ambitious. With zero discharge, no water at all is lost and everything is re-circulated within the company. "The challenge in water purification is not only to meet the removal of crop protection products, but that there is also an emission standard for nitrogen," says Danny Rood of KaRo B.V. "We are trying to aim more for water disinfection in order to get the water streams closed. Then a grower will also meet the emission standard for nitrogen."
Chlorine up to par
Based in Zwaagdijk, the company supplies filter and disinfection equipment to tulip growers in the region, as well as to vegetable cultivation companies and plant nurseries. One of those products is the Pure Chlorine Unit. The unit, which came on the market in 2013, continuously regulates the daily supply of irrigation water to keep the chlorine in the silo up to par. Danny: "The unique thing about this unit is that it produces pure chlorine the moment it is needed. The advantage of this is that no chlorate is formed and no loss of quality occurs, because no chlorine product is made in advance. In addition, only pure chlorine and no by-products are added to the process water, such as sodium, potassium and chloride, which have not been converted to free chlorine."
Capacity
The unit is available in various capacities ranging from 50 to 5,000 grams per hour. This makes it a solution for many different companies that want to disinfect their water. Danny: "The 50 gram unit is a kind of entry model for 5 to 10 m3 of water per hour to pass through it. The unit of 5,000 grams is one hundred times larger and therefore can handle a hundred times as much water. These figures may differ somewhat per company, depending on how the water is filtered. The better the filtration, the less pollution remains in the water and it is more easy for the Pure Chlorine Unit to bring the water at the desired chlorine level."
