A dozen years after Simplicity Pattern Co. left town, the mostly empty old factory on Wayne Street that once housed it may have found a new use, at least in part.
A medical marijuana company is proposing to lease up to 20,000 square feet of the facility to grow and process cannabis. The same company, Green Stem LLC, plans to locate a medical marijuana provisioning center where Sparkle Quik Lube currently is located at 1140 S. 11th St., next to Don Chepe Taqueria on the west side of the street.
Green Stem was one of two companies awarded a license for a provisioning center by City Council earlier this year after council expanded the number of such licenses from two to four. The original two licenses were awarded in December 2017. No provisioning centers have yet opened in the city. The first provisioning center in the area opened last week in Buchanan.
After obtaining the provisioning center license, Green Stem owners George and Denise Lynch soon decided to move proposed medical marijuana growing and processing operations from Orion Township near their home in Farmington Hills, Mich., to Niles. They plan to make their home here as well.
