US (MI): Grower approved in city of Portage

Medical marijuana business continues to grow in Portage despite the city opting to, at least temporarily, ban recreational marijuana shops in the city.

A city lottery last month resulted in approval of seven “provisioning centers," or marijuana dispensaries, as classified under Michigan’s medical marijuana laws. Green Eden also received approval to operate a marijuana growing operation during the lottery held on May 3, 2019.

This year, 15 applications for new dispensaries were submitted to the city of Portage.

Four of those were approved immediately based on minimum spacing requirements. Nine of the 15 were entered into the lottery because the proposed locations conflicted with local zoning restrictions that mandate 1,000 feet between medical marijuana facilities. Two of the permit applicants were disqualified or denied.
