Signify and CannNext join forces for LED research

Signify joins a long-term research collaboration to develop growth recipes for high grade medicinal cannabis crops with CannNext. CannNext is one of the first private research organizations in the Netherlands for cultivation and production of medicinal cannabis with specific compounds and a standardized quality. CannNext produces raw material for applications for medicinal purposes.

CannNext and Signify join resources to innovate faster
“We are very pleased that Signify has chosen to team-up with CannNext in the research of medicinal cannabis. We are a young company with great ambitions and working with the Signify team really helps both parties to innovate and implement new developments in the total supply chain at a faster pace,” said Eric Uleman, managing director at CannNext. “While we have the strength of understanding the business needs in the pharmaceutical world and the needs of patients, Signify provides extensive experience on cultivation and development of dedicated light recipes for crops and implementation on a larger scale. Together, we can implement new materials in the pharmaceutical market and develop lighting systems that are efficient and steer plant growth based on market needs."

Ultramodern sustainable facility
The ultimate goal for cultivation for medicinal purposes is to grow the highest quality crop - and specifically compounds - consistently all year-round. This is the only way to achieve approval to develop medicines that can be prescribed to patients. One factor is controlling all growing conditions in an indoor environment. Currently, the knowledge gathered by research on the effects of compounds was limited, because the consistency of the crop could not be guaranteed.

"CannNext cultivates with a permit from the Dutch government in a very modern, highly secured and classified indoor location. The facility is equipped with innovative climate control, watering and lighting technology for very specific cultivation and research," the team with the company explains. "The facility is environmentally friendly because almost all the water is reused, unlike many other traditional greenhouses. Of course, no pesticides are used in the cultivation of the medicinal product. The cultivation takes place in a completely closed climate system under controlled conditions, whereby all odors are eliminated."

“This is a new, rapidly evolving area that presents unique opportunities,” said Udo van Slooten, Business Leader Horticulture at Signify. “Growers have to meet strict quality standards to ensure the highest grade possible for patients who depend on the medicine produced from specific crops. Based on our long experience with other crops, our LED lighting solutions can help growers improve the quality, predictability and sustainability of their medicinal cannabis crop production.”

In the last few years, there has been a surge in the legalization of medicinal cannabis in several regions around the world. This has led to growers seeking out more controlled and energy-efficient methods of cultivating these crops in greenhouses, including the use of LED lighting and tailor-made light recipes.
