US (MI): Whitehall says yes to MMJ, and rejects recreational cannabis

Elected officials in Whitehall have said yes to medical cannabis but no to recreational pot under a new ordinance approved Tuesday.

A divided Whitehall City Council voted 4-3 on Oct. 22 to approve the ordinance that allows medical cannabis businesses to operate in Whitehall.

The ordinance allows for three medical cannabis dispensaries in the city’s general business districts and an unlimited number of grow operations, processors, secured transporters and safety testing facilities to operate in Whitehall’s industrial zones.

Prospective pot entrepreneurs will be expected to pay a nonrefundable $1,200 license fee when they apply for a license, according to the ordinance. Those who acquire a license from the city will be required to renew the license each year and pay an annual fee of $5,000.
