The countdown is on as marijuana cultivation sites across the state are working to keep up with the demand, which is expected to hit come January 1st, 2020.
"We're gearing up for a high density grow to support both the medical and recreational market,” Ascend Wellness Vice President of Operations David Jerome said.
Ascend Illinois is one of the largest cultivation centers in the state, producing roughly 100 pounds of marijuana flower each week.
"We're getting this thing right and as we move forward our focus really is to build an organization that's growing the best cannabis in the state of Illinois,” Jerome said.
The 75.000-square-foot facility is in Barry, Illinois and takes marijuana from seed to plant to product. The process takes 15 to 20 weeks.
"There's a lot that goes into it to make sure we can maintain the right environment, temp, humidity, enough light,” Ascend Wellness Vice President of Cultivation Frank Mancinelli said. “So we're working through those. We're trying out new strains, we've got a new crew, a new facility. So there's a whole lot of moving parts."
