The City Council on Tuesday granted Life Essence a special permit for a cannabis manufacturing facility at 56 Canal St.
Life Essence, a division of Trulieve Cannabis Corp., must now apply for licensing with the Cannabis Control Commission, which oversees the state’s medical and recreational cannabis industry.
The City Council’s Ordinance Committee continued a hearing April 30 on Life Essence’s permit request. The permit garnered no resistance from the committee chaired by Ward 5 Councilor Linda Vacon.
Life Essence proposes renovating a 140,000-square-foot building. The company told the committee it plans to create 200 to 300 jobs.
Ward 3 Councilor David Bartley said Life Essence’s investment was substantial, particularly in job creation. He added that Life Essence and other cannabis-related businesses see opportunities in rehabbing and repurposing Holyoke’s former mill buildings.
