Cannabis was included for the first time ever in the Monerey County Crops Report released on Tuesday.
"Today, in my opinion, is a historic day, largely because we are involved in a report that deals with agricultural commodities," said Salinas attorney and cannabis advocate Aaron Johnson
Based on the information provided by growers cannabis cultivation reaped $450 million in revenue in 2019 and generated $14 to $15 million in taxes. Cannabis growers were not able to provide the agriculture commission with an exact price per pound but instead used the global average which is about $820 a pound.
Johnson said growers were hesitant to provide information for the report because of the high taxation and regulation their lucrative industry has faced since cultivation became legal in the county. Only 50 to 60 percent of growers provided information.
