A long vacant warehouse in Waukegan could be the new home of a marijuana craft grower as early as next year.
The Waukegan City Council voted 8-1 last week to grant Goddess Growers the conditional-use permit it needs to open a marijuana-related business in town. Ald. Edith Newsome, 5th, cast the sole no vote.
For Ald. Greg Moisio, 3rd, the approval was "a no brainer," especially in light of the still unknown financial hit the city will take because of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shutdown.
"Going forward, we need to take darn near any business that wants to come to Waukegan," Moisio said. "We don't know how many of our other businesses are going to get back up and running. Here we have a business that's going to come in, not asking for any deals, anything like that."
