US (MA): Cannabis company's employees vote to unionize

Employees of cannabis company New England Treatment Access voted to form a union under the United Food and Commercial Workers, which bills itself as the largest U.S. private-sector union.

UFCW Local 1445 said Wednesday that 60 workers at NETA’s cultivation facility in Franklin cast the votes to unionize. The Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations, or another neutral arbiter, must still certify the results.

If the results are certified, the union plans to bargain for a contract for the workers.

NETA, the largest cannabis employer in Massachusetts, has cannabis shops and medical dispensaries in Brookline and Northampton. The company had 750 employees in 2019, according to Business Journal research.

UFCW represents 1.3 million people who work in cannabis shops, grocery stores, retail, and meatpacking and food-processing facilities.
