US (CA): "Many cannabis operators have not been paying taxes"

The Board of Supervisors considered options for changing the cannabis tax model for Santa Barbara County operators but voted Tuesday to wait on additional financial information from local audits and state databases.

In Santa Barbara County, many cannabis operators have not been paying taxes, either because they report no sales or don’t report at all, according to the County Executive Office. The CEO announced an enforcement shift to tax compliance and odor control two years ago, but both issues persist.

Supervisors want to reassess the current system, which taxes cannabis operators based on a percentage of their self-reported gross receipts.

This week, County Treasurer-Tax Collector Harry Hagen said his office is working with a consultant to do financial monitoring and audits of local operators. “Everyone will be audited at some point,” he told the Board of Supervisors. “Not every year, but your number will come up.”
