Samsung Horticulture Lighting:

Exciting product development coming up for horticulture

"As one of the world's largest semiconductor companies, we manufacture LEDs which are light-emitting diodes, and deliver proper PPE and reliable products. Samsung contributes to the development and performance improvement of the horticulture lighting industry by continuously developing various products based on proprietary flip-chip technology and horticulture-exclusive spectrum technology," says Y.S. Park, Principal Engineer of the LED Business Team at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung's presence in horticulture
Samsung has specialized researchers who study the horticultural spectrum and carry on numerous empirical experiments in conjunction with relevant departments of a renowned university. In addition, the company has been actively participating in the industry since the early stages of the market and growing the market together with major horticultural lighting companies that are active in the market.

Full line-up of horticultural lighting
Currently, Samsung is focusing on providing a full line-up of solutions applicable to the horticulture lighting industry by segmenting the market into indoor farming, vertical farming, and greenhouse farming, with suitable products for each segment. The company has launched greenhouse farming products with improved cost-effectiveness and reliability, indoor farming 'white products' with a very high PPE performance.

New red LED solution
"Also, we are currently developing the most optimized solution for vertical farming lighting, which is at unique environments with the lighting applied closer to the plants," shares Park. Besides that, we can soon expect the launch of an exclusive red LED solution optimized for vertical farm spaces. "We believe the main issue is to provide the most suitable solutions for various situations and crops in the horticulture market."

Park affirms that the company is testing the importance of uniformity of red light sources in vertical farming. The test results were made public at the Light+Building exhibition held from 2 to 6 October in Frankfurt, Germany.

Market expectation in five years
Within the next five years, a significant portion of the HPS lighting in the greenhouse market is expected to convert to LED lighting. In addition, plants with high medicinal or commercial properties will be grown in indoor farming or vertical farming. Adding to that, there will be a dramatic improvement in productivity and quality. To this end, Samsung plans to provide not only cost-effective products for indoor farming, vertical farming, and greenhouses but also the optimal spectrum solution for special plant cultivation.

"For the common benefit and sustainable development of mankind, research to solve the world's food shortage and supply-demand imbalance must carry on, and as part of that, Samsung will continue to research the light sources specialized for plant growth with many experts. This is in line with Samsung's corporate philosophy of contributing not only to corporate profits but also to human society," Park confirms.
