"We are unique because of our history of innovation as a breeder-owned company. We will never rush a release in order to capitalize on the latest on-trend genetics. When we do release our own version, we do so with enhanced aspects such as terpene profiles, resin production, yield potential, and stability," says Damian Nixon of Paradise Phytogenetics. "Paradise Seeds was first established in 1994 and is one of the world's oldest and most trusted seed banks. We launched Paradise Phytogenetics as a new brand in 2021 to talk directly to commercial LPs, principally in Europe and Latin America. We are focused on the commercial, horticultural, regulatory, and logistical needs of Licensed Producers. Essential to the success of any cultivation project is the quality of the plants being grown, and Paradise Phytogenetics taps into nearly 30 years of cannabis breeding experience as well as having access to 50+ premium cultivars from the Paradise Seeds catalog."
Trends
The Paradise team has noticed an ongoing trend: the increase in demand for consumer choice in relation to medical cannabis patients. "The market has been fixated on high THC levels for a while, and we have a number of varieties that cater to this end of the market. But we are seeing signs that medical providers want to supply clinicians and patients with a wider variety of chemical profiles. Interest in balanced and lower THC varieties is driven by demand from patients with no previous cannabis experience. At the same time, there has been a greater interest in terpenes, both in terms of differentiating the end product and for the 'entourage' effect."
Supporting large-scale producers
"Large-scale cultivation of cannabis poses a number of challenges compared with home-growing," Damian mentions. "In particular, LPs must produce to very high standards of quality and consistency. Given the large sums invested in these facilities, crop loss poses a significant threat to LPs, whether from pests, disease, or unstable genetics. The current demand for high potency has led to a proliferation of exotic poly-hybrids from the US, which have often been bred from unstable parent lines and have a tendency to hermaphroditism. Paradise takes the time to stabilize a variety as much as possible before releasing it, and our catalog includes varieties with improved resistance to pests and molds."
The Paradise Phytogenetics ethos is that they are only successful if their clients are successful. "That's why we work hand in hand with customers to ensure they get the best performance from our genetics – from variety selection and phenotyping to advice on propagation and cultivation. We have partnered with Delphy, a leading player in the Dutch horticultural industry, to provide expert horticultural consultancy to our clients from the moment they select Paradise as their genetics partner."
"For the future, we aim to maintain our position at the forefront of product innovation in cannabis genetics and to focus on the supply of premium starting material to LPs in Europe and beyond. We will be making some big announcements about this over the next 12 months - so watch this space!"
