“The goal is to give smaller parties a chance to test their products and developments on cannabis. Not everyone has the means, budget, or know-how to start cannabis research. We’re trying to lower that threshold by providing a platform: the Acceleration Platform for Innovation (API),” says Dominique van Gruisen, Managing Director at Innexo. The first round of research started on May 10 in Innexo’s greenhouse in The Netherlands. “Our focus for this first API is centered around plant health, strength, and resilience.” The first “Acceleration Day” is planned on June 20 with prominent speakers of partners and participants. A visit to the API and networking is an invitation-only event.

How does it work?
Innexo has a licensed research greenhouse available where parties that meet all the regulatory and compliance requirements can rent grow tables to research their product or technology. “This gives companies an opportunity to see whether their technology is suitable for optimizing medical cannabis cultivation. It’s also a great way to collect data that helps with product development. At the same time, it’s a completely different experience than the innovative and complex ‘behind-the-scenes’ research that is done by industry-leading companies such as Fluence. Companies can experience the effects of their product or development during the production cycle,” Dominique says. “Therefore, this also works as an opportunity for companies to showcase their expertise to potential partners or clients. Companies can bring along R&D staff or customers to show off their innovations, for example.”

The lights in the greenhouse are provided by Fluence’s VYPR series fixtures with R4 spectrum. As a partner of the API, Fluence also focuses on education with their science-based approach.
For this first round, 4 companies will participate: Bionova, Cindro, Aptus Plant Tech, and Biotalys. The research is powered by Yookr, Fluence, Grodan, and Cultivators. Innexo will be providing the plant genetics. “Leading up to the research, we were busy taking care of the mother plants from our four profiled research cultivars. These are produced in our climate cells under very uniform and stable conditions. The varieties were selected specifically to suit the research needs of each of our participants.”
The first API houses 20 different research plots, a total of 8 controlled trials where tests are run with 8 biostimulants, 8 different nutrient recipes, and 4 research cultivars. Interested parties that want to know more about the API can find Dominique van Gruisen at GreenTech Amsterdam. At the event, he talked about the importance of cannabis genetics for research at the Compounds Pavilion on Tuesday, June 13, and on June 14 at 11.00 he talked about his experiences in setting up complex research on medical cannabis to innovate and optimize production at the Fluence booth #05.130.
