It's a multi-million-dollar industry that doesn't seem to be slowing down in Maine, but some say new rules for the adult-use cannabis industry could harm businesses and consumers. The state is looking for Mainers to weigh in on a series of proposed changes to the adult-use cannabis program.
"We ultimately take that feedback in, make some adjustments, and then we publish the final rules," said John Hudak, the director of the Office of Cannabis Policy. What's being considered is based on bills recently passed by the Legislature and reviews by the Office of Cannabis Policy.
"Our goal with the rules is to make sure that we strike a balance," Hudak said. That is, Hudak says, between new laws, what businesses need, and public safety.
He says lawmakers recently passed a bill that would allow edibles to have higher amounts of THC in them. "There are aspects to the changes both in law and in regulation moving forward that will expand consumer access," Hudak said. Like cannabis could soon be delivered to hotels. And a new law could allow off-premise sales at fairs or festivals.
