ILHAA and responsible hemp businesses continue advocating for smart, industry-wide regulations and consumer protections for hemp-derived products. ILHHA has called for the following regulations to support what it calls a safe and lawful hemp industry that protects consumer access and public safety.
Mandatory minimum age of 21 to purchase or 18+ for non-active-duty veterans.
Full panel testing of finished products from independent, credentialed laboratories to ensure appropriate purity and potency.
Standardized labeling that accurately reflects the contents of packaged products, matches testing, and prohibits look-alike packaging that mimics popular snacks and candy brands.
"Recently, parents, elected officials, and responsible hemp businesses have been rightfully upset by reports of children getting sick from illegitimate look-alike products packaged to look like candy or snacks appealing to children. Produced by bad actors, these products often contain synthetic compounds that are not hemp-derived. These illegitimate products need to be banned," said the ILHAA in a statement.
Those products should not be confused with safely processed, federally legal, naturally occurring hemp cannabinoid products, which should be allowed to be sold but regulated with age minimums, standardized testing, and labeling requirements.
Consumers should be able to trust the products they see on store shelves as being safe, whether that's for consumption, topical use, or products for their pets. Responsible business owners in Chicago's diverse hemp industry are committed to providing safe, quality products and take thorough precautions to make sure customers get the very best products.
