Morocco makes first exports of medical cannabis to South Africa, Switzerland

Morocco has officially launched its first exports of medical cannabis, marking a historic milestone for the country's pharmaceutical industry and its commitment to the legal use of cannabis for medical and industrial purposes.

The inaugural shipment of the locally cultivated "Beldiya" cannabis variety was dispatched Thursday from a processing facility operated by the Biokanat cooperative in the commune of Bab Berred, in the northern province of Chefchaouen, according to well-informed Hespress AR sources.

The products were transported to Casablanca's Mohammed V International Airport before being flown to specialized pharmaceutical laboratories in Switzerland and South Africa.

This first export operation was carried out by Moroccan company Canaflex, which obtained all necessary authorizations from the Moroccan Agency for Medicines and Health Products and the Autonomous Establishment for Export Control and Coordination. The shipment adhered fully to all legal and customs procedures, and was coordinated with Royal Air Maroc and international freight carriers.

The initiative is expected to give a major boost to Morocco's emerging medical cannabis sector, particularly as the local Beldiya strain is highly sought-after due to its potent therapeutic compounds.

Officials say the export milestone could also contribute to sustainable economic and social development in authorized cultivation zones, especially in northern regions, by creating jobs and improving farmers' income through licensed cooperatives.
