Delaware's Marijuana Commissioner's office could begin federal fingerprint checks soon for those entering the upcoming recreational marijuana industry.
The FBI offered partial approval of changes made through House Bill 110, which was signed by Governor Matt Meyer last month, identifying the classification of workers that would be needed to pass a federal check before being employed.
Those include owners, workers, and even those on a board of directors, but the Delaware law uses the term "agent", which the FBI felt was still too broad. Despite that issue, there still opens the door for many people to begin the federal checks, and the Office of the Marijuana Commissioner said they will be contacting selected applicants later this week with more information.
"Fingerprint-based background checks are a vital part of ensuring public safety and maintaining the integrity of the program," said Paul Hyland, Acting Marijuana Commissioner. "We appreciate the FBI's collaboration and are excited that selected applicants can continue moving forward."
