US (RI): New designated office for Control Commission

The Ocean State has officially established a designated office to oversee all licensing, compliance and enforcement related to medical and adult-use cannabis. Rhode Island became the 19th state to legalize recreational marijuana in 2022, allowing adults 21 and older to possess, use and grow cannabis.

According to the Cannabis Control Commission (CCC), the creation of the Rhode Island Cannabis Office marks a structural shift designed to streamline oversight and improve services across the industry.

Now, regulatory responsibilities previously handled by the Office of Cannabis Regulation at the Department of Business Regulation are consolidated and operate under the CCC.

"This is a critical step forward in delivering on our mission to ensure a safe, transparent, and equitable cannabis market in Rhode Island," CCC Chair Kim Ahern said. "The Cannabis Office is designed to provide clear lines of communication, licensee support, and an accountable regulatory framework."
