Growing cannabis, as it turns out, is not for the faint of heart – especially if you're aiming for medical-grade consistency. At Medocann, an Israeli company founded by the fourth generation of a family of agriculturalists, the transition from traditional farming to high-tech indoor cultivation wasn't just a business pivot. It was a necessity, born out of frustration with the unpredictability of growing cannabis under uncontrolled climate and irrigation conditions, resulting in un inconsistent products.
"Cannabis is a sensitive crop," says Narkis Tessler from Medocann Group. "Every minor environmental change has a ripple effect on the final product. If you're using it medically, that kind of variability is a dealbreaker."
A pharma grow
So, they built what is essentially a pharmaceutical facility disguised as a grow-op. It was designed for small craft batches, highly automated, and equipped with high-tech grow rooms that allow for almost obsessive levels of control: light spectrum, irrigation formulas, stress levels – you name it, they've simulated it. Each grow room has its own nutrient mix, developed through an in-house irrigation system built from scratch.
And no, they didn't bring in cannabis veterans to build it. "We brought in specialists from agriculture – people who knew controlled environments, not necessarily cannabis," Narkis explains. That decision shaped a facility designed around data and precision rather than legacy assumptions. One of the co-founders still oversees every square meter of the operation, where everything from air circulation to nutrient delivery is tailored, calibrated, and custom-built.
Post-harvest, too, is getting an overhaul. With eyes on Europe, Medocann is upgrading to EU-GMP standards – because you can't just ship to Germany or Switzerland with a decent COA and a dream. The new facility is being built next door and is expected to go live in 2026. "We're not cutting corners," says she. "This will be as clean, professional, and scalable as anything in the European supply chain."
For now, Israel's domestic market remains limited to dry flower and oils – with the latter barely moving the needle. But Medocann is developing oil-based products anyway, mostly for its more strictly medical-facing brand. Manufacturing for those will be done overseas to get around local bottlenecks.
On the genetics side, the company splits its efforts between two brands: SEVEN, the medical-grade line stocked with tried-and-tested legacy strains, and SOLO, which leans more into innovation and is loaded with high terps.. Their R&D lead hand-picked genetics from around the world, and they're always hunting for the next standout cultivar. Propagation happens in-house via tissue culture, which is also a part of their pesticide-free approach, which demands strict biosecurity. "You don't want to bring in the wrong thing," Tessler notes.International expansion is officially underway. A new grow room just went live, and plans to double cultivation capacity are in motion. The company is already talking with distributors in Germany, the UK, Poland, Switzerland, and Australia. The UK launch is just a few months away. Germany, of course, is the big one.
"There's a gold rush feel in Germany right now," she says. "Eventually, the market will split in mass-market versus premium. We're aiming for the premium side."
The tariffs situation in Israel
And then there's the ongoing circus around imports in Israel. "Imports are coming in like crazy," she says. "What's wild is that importers have already raised their prices, even before the tariffs kick in. It's a bit of a mess." The risk, Narkis says, is that constant product turnover from importers undermines patient care. "There's no continuity. Patients get used to something, and then it's gone. That's a serious problem."
She's not against imports, just against unchecked dumping. "If it costs half to import than to grow here, the local industry can't survive without some kind of protection. We need a balance. Right now, it's anything but balanced."
