US: Rhode Island Commission Chair steps down, eyes political run

Kim Ahern, the chair of the Rhode Island Cannabis Control Commission, is stepping down. Ahern was appointed by Governor Dan McKee and has served as the inaugural chair of the Commission in 2023, playing a critical role in establishing Rhode Island's legal cannabis regulatory framework.

Multiple sources tell GoLocal that Ahern is eyeing a run for Rhode Island Attorney General. Previously, she worked on both McKee's and Governor Gina Raimondo's staffs.

"Under her leadership, the Commission developed Rhode Island's first set of adult-use cannabis regulations, launched the state's Social Equity Applicant Certification process, and opened the inaugural Adult-Use Cannabis Retail License Application period for all license types, including social equity applicants and worker cooperatives," claimed a press release issued by McKee's office. But a GoLocal review of the program found little growth despite big hype.

"I want to thank Kim for her leadership during a crucial time in Rhode Island's implementation of adult-use cannabis," said Governor McKee. "She helped stand up the Commission from the ground up and ensured that Rhode Island's cannabis industry was launched with public health, safety, and fairness as priorities. I've had the privilege of working closely with Kim since her time in my office, and I've seen firsthand her professionalism and commitment to public service. We wish her the very best."
