The German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) has increased the maximum amount of cannabis imports for medical and scientific purposes to around 192.5 tonnes. The BfArM had not approved any imports since mid-September, as the original maximum quantity of 122 tonnes had been exhausted. As the BfArM krautinvest has announced, it has been approving cannabis imports again since the beginning of the week.
In 2024, imports were still around 71.1 tonnes. Before the exemption from the Narcotics Act (BtMG), imports of cannabis for medical and scientific purposes were 32.5 tonnes in 2023.
The BMG has explicitly cited the increased import volume with a comparatively low increase in statutory health insurance prescriptions as a reason for tightening the Medical Cannabis Act. Critics see this development as a logical consequence due to the removal from the BtmG.
