Photos: Powerplants Australia 25 year celebration

Here's a little fact about Marcus van Heijst with Priva Oceania that you didn't know. When racing on Green Machine Trikes, he beats everybody. During the festivities for the 25th celebration of Powerplants Australia, he became the overall winner.

The 35 employees of Powerplants, a Australian turnkey supplier of greenhouse projects and nursery automation systems, celebrated extensively last month. The facility in Hallam Victoria was changed into a race track where over 60 attendees battled over the prizes. Each corner, bend, chicane and straight was named after a product that Powerplants manufactures - as you can see with the Nutrilux bend with a Nutrilux behind it.

The night was completed with stand-up comedy and Thai street food served from food trucks.

Founder Carl Van Loon, whilst working in his family’s nursery business, realised that people who understood Greenhouse Technology were very rare, giving him the inspiration to solve this problem for the Australian Horticulture industry.

It was during a seven month trip to Holland that Powerplants was born. Carl returned to Australia in 1994, registered the business name Powerplants and started operating the business from his bedroom. Supported by family members David and Trish van Loon, the hunch proved correct and there was a hungry market for experience and technical understanding. Fast forward 25 years and Powerplants is a successful Australian owned company employing 45 full time employees and contractors. Amongst their partners various European suppliers such as Priva, DeGier, Svennson, Alweco, Holland Scherming, Javo, Flier, Da Ros, Bosman van Zaal, Philips, and IDM to name a few.

Another of the Powerplants' passions is manufacturing locally. The company manufactures Climate Control Computers, Fertigation and UV Sterilisation equipment, Circulation Fans, Ebb & Flood Benches, Fogging Systems and Electrical Control Cabinets. Last year Powerplants exported over a million dollars’ worth of UV Disinfection systems to Canada though US company Urban-Gro.

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing but Carl believes the success of the business comes down to being able to surround himself with good people. ‘I’ve been involved in horticulture all my life and the one thing that has never changed is the culture of the industry. It is populated by very down to earth people and that is a huge appeal to me.  I genuinely enjoy working with people who are attracted to the industry.’

Carl’s philosophy is always to look at the long term relationship with growers and suppliers, not the short term profits. ‘We have always focused very strongly on the needs of our customers and ensuring that they are happy with any project that we undertake, I have found if the clients are happy, the profits usually follow’, he said.

But businesses don’t succeed for just one reason. Carl points out that Powerplants has thrived in an industry that has seen its share of challenges because he has the right attitude and is in it for the right reasons. Carl is always prepared to put his customers, his staff and his projects ahead of profit. Drawing on his experience growing up, Carl always puts himself in the grower’s position and asks: ‘Would I be happy with that?’ "We will continue to develop relationships with suppliers so that they can offer the best possible solutions to their customers each and every time for another 25 years! "
