UG: President Yoweri Museveni launches cannabis growing company

Uganda is set to become one of the countries to dispense medical cannabis after President Yoweri Museveni launched a cannabis growing company, the Industrial Hemp (U) Ltd.

The launch comes just months after a committee chaired by the Prime Minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, Health minister Dr. Ruth Aceng, Trade and Industry Minister Amelia Kyambadde, Matia Kasaija of Finance, Agriculture’s Vincent Ssempijja, and Internal Affairs Minister Gen. Jeje Odongo, reportedly agreed to give patients access to therapeutic cannabis.

Industrial Hemp (U) Ltd, a private firm working with an Israel company, Together Pharma Ltd, is currently growing and processing cannabis from its Kasese facility.

The company was given the license in 2016 to cultivate and process cannabis in Uganda at an industrial scale. Its Ugandan facilities produce and export pharmaceutical, therapeutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetic grade cannabis ingredients.

The company is also in the process of exporting cannabis, Cannabinol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with a mixture of 2.7mg THC and 2.5mg CBD for Sativex drugs approved in USA, Europe, and Canada.
