“We get a lot of requests for covering water surfaces from all over the world”, says Bas van der Elst of Hendic. “A lot of valuable water is lost due to evaporation otherwise, and without adequate coverage, algae growth causes trouble in the filtration- and drip systems. Storing water in silos and reservoirs is important, but we shouldn’t underestimate the covering of these storages. In case it’s possible to cover the reservoirs for at least 82 percent and the silos for 100%, you get the optimal usage from your water buffer.”

Reservoirs are getting larger
Bas van der Elst and Nicolle Peetoom of Hendic notice that more and more water reservoirs are being built both for cultivation in greenhouses and open fields. “Reservoirs of 30,000 m³ are no longer exceptional in horticultural companies. This marks a change in the industry that is experiencing the impact of climate change, which causes the summers to be longer and dryer than before.”

Covering with a floating cover
Due to the large surface of a reservoir, evaporation is a real issue, by covering it with a floating cover on the water surface, a closed DelaFloat system, the problem can be managed. “The white reflecting upper layer decreases the heating of the water by reflecting the UV-radiation. Algae hardly gets a chance to grow on the foil due to its smooth surface. This way, you can prevent issues with the filtration and drip systems. Last but not least, the cover also allows you to store more water in the reservoir because covering the reservoir leads to fewer waves forming.”
