Palm Springs City Council on Wednesday approved a “zero-tolerance” policy that seeks to assuage resident concerns about wafting odors generated by cannabis cultivation businesses.
The council also implemented changes to city zoning code that would centralize cannabis cultivation to a partly undeveloped stretch of the Interstate 10 corridor.
These changes were approved simultaneously in a 4-0 vote. Councilwoman Christy Holstege recused herself, citing a conflict of interest involving her spouse’s business interests.
Mayor Pro Tem Geoff Kors, who sits on the cannabis subcommittee that began drafting the policy changes in July, said the goal is to provide parity to all stakeholders, while also coming up with a plan for odor control that puts residents' needs first.
“No one, whether you live across the street or three miles away, should be subject to cannabis odor where you live,” Kors said. “That has to stop.”
