Apeks Supercritical, a botanical oil extraction business that manufactures equipment used in the cannabis and hemp industry, has grown faster than buildings can be completed to house its operations.
Apeks moved into its new 30,000-square-foot building at 31 Greenscape Court in the Johnstown Industrial Park this summer, but may need to expand again soon.
The company, which has 45 employees, provided a tour of its new home on Wednesday when it also discussed the need for more space. Apeks extraction systems use carbon dioxide as a solvent to extract oil from botanical plant material.
General Manager Andy Joseph said Apeks doubled its revenue this year and added 20 employees. Joseph, who founded the company in 2001, was owner and president until Buffalo-based Gibraltar Industries acquired the company in August for $12.6 million.
"It's really been a great transition," Joseph said. "The partnership we created with this company is really going to open doors for us. I could never have done it as an individual. It'd been impossible.
"We could be looking at expansion the second or third quarter next year. Ideally, we'd look for expansion close to us here. There's a lot of land (here), but no infrastructure, no buildings."
And the company can't wait for a new building to be ready.
