The region of Sicily has approved that it will take care of the expenses for medical cannabis patients. The administrative order was signed by assessor of health Ruggiero Razza. The medicines will be free for patients afflicted by chronic and neuropathic pain, and by spasticity and sclerosis. The order outlines all the rules to follow for the prescription, the distribution, and reimbursement of medical cannabis treatments.
Only doctors working in regional public health companies can prescribe the medicines. "This is a huge step forward," the Medical Cannabis Patients Committee said. "However, there is still a lot of work to do as many conditions have not been included. We will keep working to guarantee everyone the right to be treated. Additionally, we have been told that educational courses for doctors are being organized by the Order of Physicians throughout Sicily."
The Esistoni i Diritti Committee president, Gaetano D'Amico, remarked. "Now the challenge is to make cultivation happen in Sicily. There is a lot of interest in this, and the Sicilan authority for agricultural development offered its fields for the cultivation for medical purposes."
