Water Disinfection and biofilm control with ECA (Electrically Chemically Activated) Water

The first onsite disinfectant generator to be PMRA certified by Health Canada for agriculture applications is now available for the North American market.

"Our certified ECA-Water generators can be used to treat irrigation water for all sorts of crops such as fruits, vegetables, medicinal cannabis and (cut) flowers. ECA-Water is a powerful water disinfectant that is safe, effective and economical," Bjorn Korthouwer with VDH Water Technology explains.

The process is simple; using an electrical process. a clean and stable disinfectant is made from powdered potassium chloride and stored in a tank. "There is no need to bring in chemicals or changing over hazardous solutions," says he. "The hypochlorite solution in the tank is then injected, while irrigating, in the mixing tank, day tank and/or inline on the fly to the plants. The bio- film control is therefore automated and ever present. Piping, tanks and drippers are cleaned and stay clean. No more clogging drippers and no more pathogen contamination in the greenhouse."

The strong advantage of ECA-Water over ozone, peroxide and chlorine dioxide is that it has a residual disinfection effect. ECA-Water is still active at the end of the irrigation line. It is measurable and therefore easy to control.

VDH Water Technology is a Canadian based company manufacturing the ECA-Water generator in a CSA/UL Certified facility. "Our mother company in The Netherlands has developed these devices for the aquatics and potable water market years ago. We have modified these devices to be applicable for the North- American agriculture and horticulture market and are now the only PMRA certified onsite generators. There are different capacities of the ECA-Water generators available that are suitable for small indoor facilities and for large scale greenhouses."

"Zwart Systems is the premier North American greenhouse irrigation specialist based in Ontario, Canada and our preferred dealer in North- America," he points out. "They have adopted ECA-Water into their irrigation water treatment plan. Zwart Systems’ clients across Canada and the USA have proven this equipment for almost a decade. The ECA water that it produces has been highly reliable and effective in resolving irrigation issues and maintaining healthy crops and clean systems."

Fresh water supplies such as wells, ponds, rivers, municipal and cisterns can be treated to ensure cleanliness.  As well, drain return water and re-circulating (NFT or flood tables/floors) can be treated from the same unit and storage tank.

"A full design, installation and service team is available to help you size the equipment and injection pumps, assist in installing it and keeping it running smoothly for years!"
