US (CA): Humboldt County cannabis industry welcomes California’s halt on tax increases

Humboldt County cannabis advocates are calling a new California law that will halt cannabis tax increases until next year a “step in the right direction,” but they maintain the industry needs further legislation to thrive.

The bill, AB 1872, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom last week, will pause any markups to the state’s cannabis tax through July 2021 and also freeze inflation-related increases until the end of next year.

Stakeholders in Humboldt County’s marijuana industry say the new policy will buy time for legislators to streamline a complex tax system and truly promote the industry.

“It’s a step in the right direction,” said Ross Gordon, policy director for the Humboldt County Growers Alliance. “That said, we have also been hopeful that there would be broader tax reform.”
