US (NY): Five years in, MMJ growers look to future

It’s been five years since Vireo Health started growing medical cannabis here, on the site of what used to be the Tryon youth center.

And while the irony of growing legal cannabis on what used to be a junior prison is lost on no one, the people at Vireo are looking ahead on their fifth anniversary, hoping for some political developments that could boost their fortunes to new highs.

“At some point, it has to come off Schedule 1,” said Dr. Stephen Dahmer, Vireo’s chief medical officer, referring to the federal law that continues to put cannabis in the same category as hard drugs like heroin.

Dahmer’s remarks came Monday during a tour of Vireo’s greenhouse and processing facility that turns the buds from hundreds of cannabis plants into various tinctures, soft gel tablets and inhalable “vaporizers” that can be purchased with a medical prescription.
