Legal way opened for cannabis cultivation in Nepal

Legal way has been opened for cannabis cultivation in Nepal. As a member of the Secretariat of the UN Commission on Narcotics, Nepal has also voted in favor of opening up cannabis cultivation.

According to Sher Bahadur Tamang, an MP from the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), Ambassador to Geneva Prakash Kumar Subedi has voted in favor of reopening cannabis cultivation as per the decision of the Government of Nepal. Tamang has been taking initiative for several years to move a bill in the parliament to open cannabis cultivation.

According to Tamang, the World Health Organization (WHO) had written a letter to the United Nations three years ago to remove marijuana from the list of drugs and put it on the list of medicinal plants. He said the process had been sent by the United Nations for discussion among its member states.

In Geneva, 27 countries, including Nepal, voted in favor of a proposal to ease cannabis bans in international treaties on narcotics, Tamang said.

According to him, this is the first time that Nepal has exercised its voting right in favor of medicinal cannabis in the 53-member judging board of the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961.

He also said that the responsibility of legalizing cannabis has now fallen on the shoulders of the Nepali government.
