Being a delicate plant known for its specific growing requirements, cannabis demands precision growing techniques and excellent products for a successful growth. This can already be found in ancient literature that describes the growing of cannabis and its beneficial -medical- uses. Without denying the importance of every type of input such as fertilizers, clean water and light, it is no secret that for successful growing of any plant, it starts with the right growing medium. Stone wool products
From the early eighties, growing in stone wool substrates has been developed and constantly improved. Initially for vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers and later for flowers like roses and gerbera’s. Fred continues: ”From that period on, Benfried has created their own line of stone wool substrates and has supplied growers worldwide with a premium product, which sets itself apart from other brands. The developments continue up to this day with research and trials in various crops and under different and challenging circumstances.” Basically, stone wool is melted basalt (or volcanic) stone; its threads are spun and are glued together by chemicals containing, among others, formaldehyde. Fred: “The premium product of Benfried sets itself apart because it is produced with an organic glue, or binder, instead of chemicals, known as Ecose®. Besides the benefits for the environment and to human nature, this stone wool with an organic binder named Speedgrow Green® leads to excellent growing results. It is a more forgiving substrate which is loved by plants.”
As cannabis legalization takes place in various states and countries, Benfried has started to develop and to extend the program which resulted in a line of products, including slabs, starter blocks and big blocks of 10cm3, 15cm3 and 20cm3. The starter and/or big blocks come with either 28/40mm or 38/40mm plant holes and corresponding plugs in 126- or 84- hole trays .
