US (MA): Century-old building gets ok for cannabis cultivation

A large cannabis grow operation has been approved for one of Muskegon’s iconic yet crumbling factories.

A portion of the old Shaw-Walker factory on West Western Avenue will be turned into a medical cannabis grow operation by the building’s owner and an Israeli medical cannabis firm.

The rezoning allowing for growing, processing and provisioning of cannabis covers two parcels – comprised of multiple buildings -- at 965 W. Western Ave. and 920 Washington Ave., though Gross told commissioners the growing would occur only at one of several buildings with the 920 Washington address.

City staff told commissioners earlier that the cannabis operations could be the “last chance” to get the sprawling, century-old building redeveloped.
