US (NJ): The first cannabis greenhouse in the Garden State

A Morris County farm that once grew and sold poinsettias, Christmas trees and pumpkins is now home to very different plants — thousands of medical cannabis ones.

TerrAscend became the latest facility in New Jersey to begin growing cannabis late last year. The Canadian cannabis giant is one of just 12 companies licensed to grow and dispense cannabis in the Garden State.

But it’s the first to use a greenhouse to grow cannabis in New Jersey. Situated on an old farm in Boonton Township, the cultivation site is unlike others in the state, which grow entirely indoors and often in more populated areas.

Nick D’Amelio, the site’s head grower and geneticist, said they began growing in mid-December. There’s been “a lot of obstacles” to starting a cultivation site from scratch, “but it’s been really good. A lot of success so far,” he said.
