Japan considering lifting ban on cannabis-based medicines

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has decided to lift the ban on domestic use of cannabis-based medicines.

Because it is subject to the Cannabis Control Law in Japan, doctors who are treating epilepsy patients have called for the lifting of the ban.

For this reason, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare set up a meeting of experts in January to consider reviewing the law.

In Japan, possession and cultivation is prohibited. To further the country's efforts along this route, the Ministry said that he was considering a so called 'use crime', which would impose penalties on consumers.

On the other hand, some members of the Council of Experts have expressed a cautious stance, saying that "strict punishment does not necessarily lead to prevention of abuse," and it is expected that discussions will be held again.
