UV-C radiation project wins BASIS’ Paul Singleton award

Vitacress trainee growing manager, Lukasz Sipior, has been awarded the BASIS Paul Singleton Award for his project which focused on the effect of UV-C light as a solution to powdery mildew on rosemary. Presented at Cereals, Mr. Sipior was awarded the accolade after receiving the highest number of marks for the research element of the Certificate in Crop Protection course.

“My project was inspired by a huge loss of crop earlier on in my career,” Mr. Sipior reveals. “What initially seemed an adverse event, turned out to be the roots of a high-quality study.”

After graduating from university in Poland, Mr. Sipior joined Vitacress in 2010 and has worked his way up to his current position as a trainee growing manager. “Acquiring a BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection is a real career milestone, and the practical knowledge I’ve gained helps me on a daily basis. Networking with like-minded individuals was a highlight of the training course for me. We exchanged advice and information which gave us a valuable understanding of holistic approaches to crop management,” says Mr. Sipior.

“The training, which was provided by Graham Bryant from Growtrain, was intense, but trainer Debbie Wedge delivered this brilliantly,” expressed Mr. Sipior.

BASIS CEO, Stephen Jacob, presented Mr. Sipior with the Paul Singleton Award at Cereals, and says the hard work which Mr. Sipior put into his project was reflected in his mark and the securing of the recognized award. “Lukasz is proof that determination and a willingness to learn can help individuals achieve their career goals. He has expressed an interest in the FACTS qualification and a BASIS diploma, both of which we’d be delighted to welcome him onto in the future.”
