South African politician suggests Elon Musk is among the billionaires that can help make space cannabis a reality

A South African politician thinks cannabis in space may prove key to reindustrializing the Vaal region’s economy, but he just needs a helping hand from the likes of Elon Musk, Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos to get the effort off the ground.

Extending a challenge on behalf of himself and Prof. Benny de Beer, Gauteng province premier David Makhura called on the billionaire space racers to “take our South African cannabis strains to Mars and Space to grow and cultivate.” Through these cannabis seeds, he tweeted, “we can create our own pharmacy in space. Let’s build new sustainable industries.”

Makhura posted the tweet following a promotional visit to the Full Spectrum medicinal marijuana processing plant, which according to Tech Financials, is the first licensed and most advanced cannabis facility in the country, on Oct. 6.

The idea would be to launch cannabis from the company to outer space, perhaps beyond, the publication reports. “This out of this world indoor cannabis medicinal unit is a first of its kind and is central to unleashing the potential of the Vaal,” Makhura tweeted.
