Governor Andy Beshear on legalizing medicinal cannabis:

US (KY): "It's time we joined so many other states in doing the right thing"

When asked whether he believes Kentucky should allow both medical and adult-use cannabis, Governor Andy Beshear said: "Kentucky should definitely move forwards with medical cannabis. It is past time. This is the future. This is where things are going. It's time we joined so many other states in doing the right thing."

He continues to explain that the Bill that has been filed regarding adult-use cannabis would not legalize adult-use cannabis, but that nobody should go to jail simply for using it. "I do think, in the future, we should be open to conversations on adult-use cannabis, but what I am advocating in this session is medicinal cannabis."

The Governor believes that an important part of legalizing medical cannabis is providing the industry structure that allows Kentucky farmers and Kentucky businesses to thrive. "Our farmers could benefit significantly from the legalization of medicinal cannabis and from being allowed to grow that cannabis for other states. We need to have the right structure and ensure it is not abused here in Kentucky: that requires the right framework. We want to set that up to have an opportunity for success, and not just to score political points."
