Dutch greenhouse horticulture companies sold for record price in 1st half 2022

In the first half of 2022, 15 greenhouse horticulture companies were sold in the Netherlands. The average selling price of 1.4 million euros was not this high before, according to the Dutch Association of Estate Agents (NVM). The brokers' association attributes the increase to the sale of some more expensive properties.

In mid-2022, there were 35 companies for sale. According to NVM in its report 'Vastgoedmarkt in beeld Agrarisch & Landelijk' (Real estate market in view Agrarian & Rural), this means that the decline that started in 2015 has continued. The asking price of glasshouse horticultural businesses fell slightly compared to 2021 and is around 1.2 million euros.

Jos Ebbers, NVM Agrarisch & Landelijk trade group chairman, said in a comment that energy costs are leaving a "firm mark" on continuity. The uncertain situation is likely to lead to less dynamism in the market and a decline in the number of transactions in the rest of 2022. Besides the high energy costs, the increased construction costs are slowing down innovations and the sustainability of buildings.

From the rest of the report, it can be seen that a remarkably high number of dairy farms were sold in the Netherlands, while few pig farms were for sale. The price of arable land and grassland rose. View the whole report here (NL).
