US (OR): "The purpose of this trip was to evaluate and characterize the latest F1 hybrids"

At the end of August 2022, F1 SeedTech's COO and Head of Applied Sciences, Maikel de Bresser and Andreu Francés visited New Breed Seed. This is their day-neutral breeding station in Oregon, United States, which recently completed the acquisition. The purpose of this trip was to evaluate and characterize the latest F1 hybrids and also to draw up the breeding plan for the coming years.

Evaluation
A total of 16 new F1 hybrids were available for evaluation at the New Breed Seed outdoor location. Maikel de Bresser said: “It is special to see that cannabis can be grown here in the open air, in Europe this is mainly in high-tech greenhouses, mainly for safety reasons. But here it is seen as a solution to the falling prices, so the day-neutral Cannabis plant offers a way out to run several cycles per year.”

According to our scientist, Andreu Francés, the latest F1 hybrids have proven to be vigorous and show high yield. “The F1 hybrids have a solid structure, are nicely uniform, and have a beautiful inflorescence structure that is almost indistinguishable from a short-day Cannabis plant. We are now curious about the results from the laboratory to check what the cannabinoid content and terpenes profiles are like,” said Andreu Francés.

Breeding plan
After the acquisition of New Breed Seed was completed, it was necessary to draw up a breeding plan for the next three years. Of course, there were already many ideas about the past year, but there were no concrete agreements.

COO Maikel de Bresser says: “Another goal of this trip was to agree on the next three years’ R&D strategy by performing several brainstorming sessions. Finally, a detailed R&D plan has been established putting the focus on specific segments, new traits, and breakthrough innovations.”
