December 7-8

Bedrocan founder to talk about the quality of cannabis products in workshop

ASTM and USP are hosting an international workshop on the quality of cannabis products on December 7-8. Bedrocan is sharing its knowledge in this free online workshop. During these two days, standards and guidelines from USP, PhEur, ASTM, and other relevant organizations will be discussed to address cannabis quality challenges. Science-based resources from these organizations focused on developing standards will be discussed to explore opportunities to harmonize varying national requirements for cannabis quality used for medical and scientific purposes.

Harmonization
Currently, there is inconsistency around the world in the development and application of analytical methods for cannabis materials and products for medical use. With the globalization of production and trade, the industry must meet different standards to enter markets. Harmonization in the Americas and Europe is the first step toward reducing technical barriers to trade and improving the quality of cannabis for medical and scientific use around the world.

Addressing common challenges through harmonization and alignment of quality standards across jurisdictions would protect patients, advance research, and improve public health around the world. The start of the harmonization process has already been initiated by Bedrocan, which complies with both the Dutch and German monograph, which will soon be replaced by the European monograph.

The workshop
The international workshop on cannabis product quality will take place on December 7 and 8 from 8:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. ET (2:00 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. CET). There is no cost to attend this event, registration is required and open.

The objectives of this workshop include:

  • Creating awareness of existing data, the regulatory framework and public policy for cannabis quality, public quality standards, and policy guidelines for defining cannabis product quality characteristics globally, initially from a U.S. and European perspective.
  • Understanding the scientific basis for standards to explore possible harmonization across standards groups.
  • Facilitate stakeholder discussions to identify needs and challenges related to cannabis quality.
  • Identify areas of global data gaps to inform future standards and research needs.

The workshop also includes four-panel sessions spread over both days. Bedrocan's founder, Tjalling Erkelens, will participate in the industry panel on day two. Tjalling will share information about Bedrocan's industry experiences in meeting regulatory requirements and using available standards for medicinal cannabis quality.
