Health Minister assures that Spain is moving towards early regulation of medical cannabis

Spain's Minister of Health, José Manuel Miñones, announced that he will present before the end of May a report that will allow the regulation of the use of medical cannabis in the National Health System (SNS). The news came after some parliamentarians have claimed the delay in the analysis of the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products (Aemps), whose deadline ended in 2022.

Miñones also extended an apology for the delay in his first appearance at the Health Commission of the Lower House. Congress had ruled in favor of regulating medical cannabis in June 2022, and the subcommittee in charge had given the Aemps a six-month deadline to issue recommendations.

However, the minister explained that additional time was needed to ensure patient safety during the monitoring of the report. "It is not a question of bad faith on the part of this Ministry, but rather an excess of zeal," he said, according to Redacción Médica.

Once the regulation is implemented, it will be possible to dispense medical cannabis, which will be available in pharmacies under prescription. According to the minister, work is already underway with the pharmaceutical industry on a strategic plan to address this issue, for which he assured that it would be necessary to move forward hand in hand with the rest of the countries of the European Union. The Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union will draw up a list of strategic and priority drugs that will allow greater autonomy for the whole of Europe.
