A key challenge for indoor farming facilities has been optimizing space while maintaining efficient growing conditions. Otte Metallbau, active in horticulture solutions, has addressed this challenge with their latest creation: the HortiRack, which can be used in growing in trays and in gutters. During Vertifarm 2023, the new solution was on display at the booth of Otte.
Anna Tugowa, a representative from Otte Metallbau, explained, "The mobile HortiRack is our newest product for Vertical Farming. It is a completely new design, which boosts the productivity of indoor farming facilities. It saves up to 50% space compared to stationary racks."
The HortiRack design is tailored for horticulture. Anna points out, "The irrigation and lighting can be integrated into the shelf. The HortiRack is 1.25m wide in order to fit with the default size of 4x4 foot lighting. A smaller width is possible, and the length is flexible." This adaptability is a key feature of the HortiRack. It can be customized to fit the specific needs of different crops and lighting configurations, making it a versatile solution for a variety of indoor farming operations.
Growers have diverse needs when it comes to space and crop requirements. Tugowa explains, "Equipped with a three-tier system, the length of the HortiRack can be extended up to 15m. The plastic trays can be placed over the full length. Therefore, space is optimized, and drainage is simplified."
The flexibility of the HortiRack in terms of size and configuration allows growers to maximize their space, whether they have a small-scale vertical farm or a larger commercial operation. Flexibility is also key when it comes to the growing options: instead of trays, the grower is able to choose gutter cultivation.

Durability is a significant concern when investing in farming equipment. Otte Metallbau has ensured that the HortiRack is built to last. Anna emphasizes, "The HortiRack is based on a very sturdy carriage – which still has a low profile. The durability of the whole system is ensured."
