The Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority will ask state lawmakers next session to grant them the ability to oversee the processing and sale of intoxicating hemp products, also known as Delta 8-THC, among other names.
Delta 8-THC comes from legal hemp, and it is a cousin to cannabis, which scientifically is known for its key component, Delta 9-THC, the ingredient that gets people high when they use marijuana products. Delta 8-THC products come from a form of the cannabis plant hemp, which was legalized by President Donald Trump when he signed the 2018 Farm Bill.
Since the legalization of hemp cultivation, what can be considered cousins to cannabis have been used to sell products in vape and smoke shops and gas stations. Sometimes, these products are being sold as "cardless cannabis" or "cannabis for people without a patient license." Delta 8-THC does not have as much strength as Delta 9 (cannabis), but you could consider it to be like Coke Zero is to Coke. They are in the same family of products, and it will still have some of the same effects to it.
"There really is a gray area in the law right now in Oklahoma, and even in the U.S. since the 2018 Farm Bill was signed," Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority Executive Director Adria Berry told FOX23.
