West Aussies set to be offered government-subsidized cannabis growing course

West Australians could soon access government-subsidized courses in growing and cultivating cannabis. At the beginning of the year, the State Government listed Federation University's Certificate III in medicinal cannabis cultivation and production on its priority industry qualification list for 2024.

The certificate's inclusion on the list means that when a provider in WA offers it, the government will subsidize the course. The course, announced by the Ballarat-based university, has received national accreditation, meaning it can be offered anywhere in Australia.

Training Minister Simone McGurk said that while no providers in WA offered the course, the listing would show providers the "high demand" for the skilled occupations. "The inclusion of the qualification on Western Australia's PIQL 2024 enables WA's training sector to offer it when the expected demand for it occurs," she said.

"The training would be publicly funded, meaning the government subsidizes the delivery cost. "As the Cook Government works to diversify the economy, Western Australia's Priority Industry Qualification List has an important role in preparing the State's workforce for the future."
