"We've seen a massive interest for our solutions from the Dutch, and global horticulture market. Through R&D, we will continue to evolve and are set to provide the most appropriate tailored solution for each operator given all their because everyone's cost estimate is different. Therefore, it is not always obvious that one solution will work for the other," says Fred van Veldhoven, Business Development Director at Skytree, a supplier of Direct Air Capture (DAC) solutions.
"There's an increasing need in the vertical farming and greenhouse sector for CO2 supplementation. Depending on the geographic locations of growers, there are significant differences in CO2 utilization between Europe and North America. It is related to regional variations in energy sources and utility costs. While gas remains predominant, the transition towards alternative energy sources, such as e-boilers and heat pumps, presents a compelling opportunity for Skytree's innovative CO2 capture technology."
Empowering DAC at any size
Fred elaborates on Skytree's ability to provide tailored solutions, catering to the needs of vertical farms and greenhouse operations of any shape or size. The Cumulus unit offers scalable solutions, generating 20 kg of CO2 per day, it addresses the CO2 requirements of small-scale vertical farm setups to large-scale facilities. "The modularity of Cumulus units allows for flexible deployment in container-sized vertical farm environments, ensuring optimal climate control and CO2 utilization for enhanced crop growth."
Whereas Stratus offers a much higher capacity of DAC which is often applied to commercial greenhouse operations given its ability to generate 2500 kg per day.
R&D and current projects
Highlighting the constant improvements of the system and its generation capability, Fred explains that R&D is mainly centered on enhancing efficiency. Besides that, Skytree has closed various partnerships with producers as Koppert Cress and trials with specialized in indoor farming such as the Wageningen University & Research (WUR).
Beaming about the latest developments, Fred says "soon, there are some exciting deployments in Amsterdam and other horticultural companies in Belgium, and Spain which soon we'll be able to share more about."
