There are a lot of people in our industry who are waiting for prices to return to Pre-Covid levels. "Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen and it seems that we are currently in the best pricing environment Post-Covid. If your strategy has been to wait for prices to drop before planning your next build, now is the time to start planning", the team with Westbrook says, referring to the upcoming Building Code changes in Canada. "This will require significantly more steel, which will result in a price jump as of January 1, 2025."
"It's no secret that prices went wild during the supply chain crisis of 2020 and 2021. At Westbrook, we tracked this phenomenon by creating a quote for 1 acre of standard Westbrook Apex Gutter Vented greenhouse and updated it each month from November 2020 until September 2023, at which point we stopped because the pricing had levelled out."
In April, the Ontario Government announced that it will be moving away from the Farm Building Code and adopting the 2020 National Building Code, effective January 1, 2025. "This prompted us to reopen our sample quote and update the pricing once more to see how this might affect things. We updated the quote and noticed a very reasonable increase of 1.7% over the last 18 months. However, as we learn more about the building code change and the impact it will have on structural design, we anticipate a significant increase in steel, and therefore in price, as shown in the graph below."
