US (MD): cannabis sales total more than $1.1 billion in first year of legalization

Total medical and recreational cannabis sales in Maryland have surpassed $1.1 billion in the first year following statewide legalization, Governor Wes Moore said in a press release Wednesday.

Since cannabis was legalized for adult consumers on July 1, 2023, adult-use sales have totaled more than $700 million and medical sales nearly $400 million. Monthly retail sales surpassed $95 million in June, with the adult-use market accounting for more than $67 million in sales, according to the Maryland Cannabis Association (MCA).

"Our new adult-use cannabis market isn't only generating extraordinary economic activity," said Gov. Moore. "It's also helping us build new pathways to work, wages, and wealth for all."

Per the release, the cannabis industry has helped promote business equity and minority ownership across the state, with the MCA and the Office of Social Equity (OSE) launching a business licensing application reserved exclusively for social equity applicants. To support this growth, the MCA also doubled its staff from 50 to 100 individuals.
